NEET Counselling 2025: Don't Make This Huge Mistake

NEET Counselling

The final and most significant step of the NEET-aspiring medical students is represented by NEET counselling when the students clear the NEET UG exam. It makes a rule in Indian medical admissions because India follows the system of admission on the basis of rank, preferences, and reservation quota.Round 1 After unexpectedly halting the choice filling procedure at the beginning of the week, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) published a new Round 1 schedule on August 6, 2025, of NEET UG 2025 counselling. The update has prolonged various essential deadlines which not only included registration that continued until 3 PM today, but has also restarted the All India Quota (AIQ) process of admissions to the MBBS and BDS seats.

What is NEET Counselling?

NEET counselling refers to the centralised system of allotting the seats in MBBS, BDS and other medical courses available to the qualified candidates in India.

It functions in two large groups:

All India Quota: AIQ is administered by MCC; 15 percent of government medical and dental college seats.

State Quota: This is carried out by individual state bodies on the remaining 85 percent of the total seats in medical and dental colleges in the state.

Choice Filling & Locking - How it Can Done Right

The second important step after NEET counselling registration is choice filling and locking which will decide your seat allotment result. This is the step where you select the desirable colleges and courses ranked as per your preference through your NEET rank, category and personal choices.

Step 1: Before Choices Research

  • Study past years cutoffs in your category and grade.
  • Look at location, tuition fees, college name and the facilities it has.
  • Plan in advance so that you do not get confused at the last minute to log in.

Step 2: Make your choices online.

  • Enter the respective of your registered credentials at the MCC or state counselling portal.
  • Putting colleges and courses on your preference list according to the order you desire they be considered.
  • Until the locking deadline, you may rearrange, add, or delete the choices any number of times.

Step 3: Lock Your Picks

  • Locking preferences is required and the failure to do so will mean the system automatically locking your last saved preferences right before the deadline.
  • When you have locked you can not make changes after that round of counselling.
  • Print a copy of the locked choices so you have a record.

Step 4: Have Required Documents On Hand

  • It is important that even after choice locking, one must be ready with all the documents that need verification after a seat is offered. Usually they will involve:

Mandatory Documents

  • NEET UG Admit Card (released by NTA)
  • NEET Result/Rank Letter
  • Class 10 Mark Sheet & Certificate (date of birth certificate)
  • Class 12 Mark Sheet & Certificate (degree of higher secondary study)
  • Photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, Driving License or Passport) issued by valid Government
  • 6 to 8 recent passport-size photographs ( as per NEET application)

Other documents (In case it applies)

  1. SC/ ST/ OBC/ EWS Category Certificate
  2. Domicile Certificate (of state quota seats)
  3. Provisional Allotment letter (After seat allotment)
  4. Some institutions require a Medical Fitness Certificate (required by some institutions)
  5. Transfer Certificate / Migration Certificate (in case of change of board/universities)
  6. PwD Certificate (in case of the candidates following disability quota claiming)
  7. Citizenship/Embassy Certificate (if relevant to NRI/ OCI/ Foreign national)
  8. Income Certificate (Scholarships/fee waivers)
  9. Sponsorship Affidavit (in the case of NRI Candidates/ OCI Candidates / Foreign Candidates)

Note: These documents are necessary to keep whether softcopied or hardcopied because when it comes to reporting, you will have an easy time should you be assigned a seat.

The Do's and Don'ts of NEET UG Counselling

  • Failure to meet deadlines which have been revised (after August 6 update).

  • Lack of enough college options.

  • Ignoring category-specific eligibility.

  • Where there was no locking over time.

Conclusion

The last stage in which one can get medical admission in India is the NEET counselling. In the new schedule of Round 1, it is advisable that candidates are quick to complete the processes of registration, filling choices, and locking since the deadlines have been changed. Such a thing as a well thought plan and taking action so far on time can be what will matter in terms of claiming what seat you want in the place you want it.
